In Retrospect

Although I’m sitting on some photos that will be put up soon (promise), the year’s end called for a little note of appreciation.

This year was the favourite one in my life so far. I’ve been telling my best friends how it really has felt like four years. From being able to get Mountains done and out with thanks to Mante, Jackie, Andrea, Rob and Nada to creating Everlea’s music video with Jesse, Derek, Steph, Sylvia and Sherry. I shot a large group of amazing bands such as Polar Bear Club against a white back drop tapped to a school in a rain storm to Circa Survive recording their next album in a tight studio. Travelled around America shooting portraits and random photos for six weeks with too many people to thank there. Shot 23 weddings, which admittedly were a bit of a task amongst everything else going on but still such a great time all the same. Worked a bunch more of video stuff. Travelled out West for some surfing adventures with Jamie Tanner. All this stuff and so much more, which I just can’t seem to remember at this moment. Personally the year was pretty great too. So many good times with good friends both old and new. Ross Corder repeatedly cooked up the most amazing food in my kitchen to share with all those who came over.

In the Counting Crows’ song ‘A Long December’ which one of my best friends covered in a link a few posts behind this, there is a line that says, “And there’s reason to believe maybe this year will be better than the last.” I had always read it like, “This year sucked. Hopefully next year isn’t so bad.” But right now, I feel like this year was so good, I can only hope next year will be even greater.

Thanks to every one apart of my 2009. You all mean the world to me and I cannot wait to get going on 2010.

WHEN I WAS YOUNG

Late Christmas Eve, I headed out from my house to check out a little art show/party some friends of mine were having. My pal and fellow photographer Gordie Ball was down from Montreal and it was good to catch up. One of my plans was to take a portrait of Gordie. My van was packed with more gear than I certainly needed but for fun, I used one of Gordie’s little p+s film cameras and took some of him smoking. Totally played off the lo-fi/Terry Richardson style I typically mock. Hopefully get those photos soon. Anyway, here is a photo of a print Gordie gave me as well as some from his newest zine “When I Was Young” which is a collection of great punk rock photos from his life. Every copy comes with an 8×10 of a different photo too, I got a sweet shot of Grade. Go to his site and find out how to get your own! Here are some photos of my haul.

Grandparents

Every Christmas I take a portrait of my grandparents. Here are two quick grabs from yesterday. Saving my favorite for something else.

A LONG DECEMBER

A little Christmas gift to everyone! One last acoustic video with my good friend Justin Dube for the year. I’m trying to compile my top ten records of 2009 for a post and as usual I will be taking portraits of my grandparents on Christmas so come back before the new year for that.

Magic Arm

A lot of readers of this blog tend to be photographers so this is for my friends with cameras. I recently purchased a Manfrotto Magic Arm and I’m loving it. Often I end up shooting in random places that setting up another full stand may sneak into the shot or I want to get a flash up in the ceiling or SOMETHING like that. If you’ve ever been in a situation like that, go get one of these!

Trevor Walroth

Here is a shot that didn’t make it into Mountains for Trevor’s section.

JP & His Ramp

My pal JP helped me out huge the other day. Here is us testing some lights/outlets so I could focus in dark places. He also built this amazing mini-ramp which is one of the coolest places I’ve ever seen.
