MNTNS 2: Surf Outtakes

Late last fall, I took off to Vancouver Island to try to document what the lifestyle for the surfers out there is like. Jamie Tanner was my guide and pretty much the most extreme dude I’ve ever met.  There are a bunch of shots in Mountains II which I feel really show the difficulty it takes to even get to the water. Here are some that didn’t get used. The last two photos are from my closest brush with death. We swam out to the island in the second last photo, then Jamie jumped off of it into the complete mess of the water trying to get one more wave in on my last day. If you look in the top-left area of the last shot, you can see a black dot which is him. From there, I had to jump off a swim back to shore with my camera. Unfortunately, I got caught in a rip-tide. Twenty or so minutes later, I was swimming the same spot, getting hit by waves and losing energy. Thankfully Jamie came back out, put himself in a risky spot and gave me the help I needed to stay alive.
